We now have an account with Netflix and patrons are invited to request the DVDs they would like us to rent. We have a one-at-at-a-time contract which means that Netflix won’t send the next request “in the queue” until the current one is sent back. There is a sign-up on the circulation desk where you can make your requests. We will call you when your Netflix request comes in and you may borrow it for up to three days. Keep in mind that we won’t receive the next patron’s request until yours is sent back. Be prompt returning or you’ll hold up the queue. If you are interested, take a look at Netflix’s 70,000 choices, and let us know what you would like. If you want to suggest a title to us, make a comment below.
Since Newsweek published an article about a NH library using Netflix for its patrons, there’s been a bit of controversy. I believe that we were the first library in New Hampshire to do so. Netflix has never contacted me to say that it was forbidden, and I don’t think it’s in their best interests to do so. Many patrons, who had never heard of Netflix, now have their own accounts. In early April 2008, I was interviewed on the phone by Library Journal. Here’s the result of that interview.

How should I let you know what movies I’d like to request?
We’ve decided to treat Netflix requests like interlibrary loans, so leave a comment here or on either Chris’ or Patti’s page under Staff (’About Us’ on the navigation bar.)

The Netflix program is working out very well. In a little over a month, 10 patrons have seen Netflix films.
To keep the queue moving, it’s important that people who reserve Netflix titles come right in to take them home when they get the phone call. And bring them right back. We only wait two or three days for someone to come in for their DVD after they’ve been notified that it is on reserve. Then, the title gets put back on the queue at the end of the line.
