Gail Marrone, Baby Book Bag coordinator for the Friends of Cook Memorial Library, Diane Robinson, Past President of Carroll County Altrusa, and Jan Hamel, President of Friends of Cook Memorial Library hold some of the Baby Book Bags that will be given out to new parents in Tamworth this year.

For over 10 years Altrusa and the Friends of Cook Memorial Library have collaborated to provide Baby Book Bags filled with board books for parents to read to their babies. These bags are given to any parent of a newborn who lives in Tamworth. It encourages reading but also invites parents to participate in the library’s children’s programs. This year the Tamworth Foundation granted $1,625 to Altrusa to enhance the Baby Bag program. Some of the funds will provide a year’s worth of baby books for the bags. With the remaining funds Altrusa will provide each parent a subscription to Parent’s magazine and a copy of Jim Trelease’s The Read-Aloud Handbook.

Cook Memorial Library participates in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Parents can pick up a tracking sheet at the library, and after each 100 books read with their child, come to the library for a sticker and suggestions for new books to try. When they reach 1,000 books, there is a prize! Carroll County Altrusa recently received a grant from Altrusa International Foundation that they will use to support the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at area libraries and preschools. Thank you, Altrusa and Friends of CML!
