Brown bag book discussion of “The Road to Dalton” by Shannon Bowring, this year’s One Book One Valley title, Friday, October 18 at 12 noon. Bring a lunch, we’ll make coffee and tea.
A Citizen’s Perambulation, Sat 10/19, 10:00 AM, meet at intersection of Ossipee Lake Road and Cross Road.
Towns are required to perambulate their town boundaries every 7 years. Perambulations consist of walking the boundaries of an adjacent town, describing what town boundary markers are found, making some survey measurements between the markers, and blazing and painting the lines if appropriate. Select Board members are the ones authorized to perambulate. However, Select Board members generally delegate the work to a professional surveyor.
The Cook Memorial Library is hosting the first ” Banntag”, a Swiss tradition that invites community members to walk their town’s boundaries. Paul King, a surveyor who did the perambulation in 2009, will coordinate the perambulation. Everyone is welcome to join in. This might take years!
We will start the Tamworth/Madison Town Line perambulation on Sat, Oct 19, at 10:00 am. We will meet at the intersection of Ossipee Lake Road and Cross Road. The section for the 19th will be 1.7 miles (3.4 miles round trip) north to Moores Pond. It is the easiest section of this town line. It is a flat walk along the Sokokis Pines, Ski and Beach, and Carved in Bark subdivision boundaries. However, it will be bushwacking, as there are no trails along the line.
All are encouraged to join in Bring appropriate footwear, clothing (blaze orange recommended), water, etc. Please call the library at 603-323-8510 with any questions.
Coming up next week:
One Book One Valley’s annual series will culminate with an evening with Shannon Bowring, author of The Road to Dalton, on Thursday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre, 34 Main Street in Conway Village. American Sign Language interpretation will be provided. This event will also be livestreamed.
The Road to Dalton is Bowring’s first novel and the sequel, Where the Forest Meets the River, was published in September. At the event, Shannon Bowring will begin in conversation with Laura Cummings of White Birch Books, and discuss what inspired her writing, why she chose to set her novels in The County, and what she’s reading. There will also be time for audience questions and discussion.
There is no admission fee or tickets required to attend the in-person presentation, though donations toward next year’s program are welcome. A cash bar will be available in the Majestic Theatre lobby from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Following the program White Birch Books will host a book signing with the author, and will have copies of Bowring’s books for sale.
