The third perambulation: Deer Hill to High Street
Towns are required to perambulate their town boundaries every 7 years. Perambulations consist of walking the boundaries of an adjacent town, describing what town boundary markers are found, making some survey measurements between the markers, and blazing and painting the lines if appropriate. Select Board members are the ones authorized to perambulate. However, Select Board members generally delegate the work to a professional surveyor.
The Cook Memorial Library is hosting the third ” Banntag”, a Swiss tradition that invites community members to walk their town’s boundaries. In Britain it’s been called a “beating of the bounds” and has taken place for over 2000 years. Paul King, a surveyor who did the perambulation in 2009, will coordinate the perambulation. Everyone is welcome to join in. This might take years!
On Sunday, September 21st at 10:00 AM we will meet on High Street, 0.2 miles east of Washington Hill Road. We’ll carpool to Rte 113 (Deer Hill Road) and hike from 113 to High Street. The map shows that the walk will start in a wetland area (after the dry summer likely not a big concern), then climb in elevation almost all the way to High Street.
All are encouraged to join in. Bring appropriate footwear, clothing, water, blaze orange, etc. Please call the library at 603-323-8510 with any questions. Because we will be carpooling, it would be helpful to send an email to amy@tamworthlibrary.org to let us know you will be coming.
