It’s the 250th anniversary of the United States of America! Did you ever wonder what Tamworth was like 250 years ago?

Cook Memorial Library and Tamworth History Center invite youth ages 7 and up to travel back in time and be a tour guide for locations in the Tamworth Village area that were active during and shortly after the American Revolution.*

Limited to 12 youth participants, not including adult helpers. Parents and caregivers are welcome and encouraged to participate along with your child(ren)! Please sign up only if you are sure you can commit to all of the meetings and tours. Register at https://bit.ly/tamworth1776.

Important dates:

Preparation meetings:

  1. Monday, June 8, 4:00-5:00pm: We’ll talk about what it might have been like to live in Tamworth as a settler at the time of the American Revolution, and learn about the people and places that will be part of the tour. We’ll finish up by forming a group to work on each of the five locations. We’ll send you home with a packet of resources to read to learn more about your group’s location. If time and the weather allows, we’ll ask parents/caregivers to take you on a visit to the tour locations on your way home.
  2. Monday, June 15, 4:00-5:00pm: Come to the library to meet with your group and start creating your tour in words and/or pictures. We’ll have drawing and writing materials, props, and other things to help you get started.
  3. Wednesday, June 17, 4:00-5:00pm: Meet at the library with your group and finish preparing your part of the tour.

Tours:

  1. Monday, June 22, 9:30am-10:30am: Present the “Tamworth in 1776 Tour” for the Tamworth Enrichment Program (Meet at the library at 9:00am)
  2. Wednesday, July 1, 11:00am-12:00pm: Present the “Tamworth in 1776 Tour” for the general public (Meet at the library at 10:30am)

Your piece of the tour could be a short skit, a poster or other type of artwork, a poem or other writing, or something else. Our goal is for you to learn about a piece of Tamworth history, then share it in a creative way. You may work in a group of friends or family, or go solo. At least one person in each group will need to talk to the public about your part of the tour.

We will include your artwork, writing, narration, and other creations for this project on the library’s website so that people can learn more about Tamworth history from your work! There will also be a paper map featuring the tour locations available all summer long at Cook Memorial Library and Tamworth History Center for anyone who wishes to take a self-guided tour.

*Tour locations: Gilman-Ayer House, Town Pound, Ordination Rock, Tamworth Town Cemetery, Tamworth Town House (original and present site)
